Road Journal

23-Mar-07
Buffalo, NY

6:00 AM – Try to wake up, decide the 6:30 will do.

7:00 AM – Depart hotel with Jeff and Fred, after having to return to my hotel room to get the car keys.

7:45 AM – Arrive at Baltimore airport, search for a nice balanced airport breakfast.  Settle for candy and an energy drink.

10:30 AM – Arrive in Buffalo, search the downtown area for food.  Jeff and I go for Mexican, Fred disappears to some other area of downtown.  My theory?  Fred was getting in some midday clubbing (made even more funny by the mental image of Fred at a club, martini in hand, “Night at the Roxbury” suit, etc.).

12:00 PM – Finally get a hotel room, and naps.

4:00 PM – Here’s where the day gets interesting.  I ask the guy at the front desk how to get to Buffalo State College.  His words were, “Just walk down that street right there.  It’s within walking distance.”  This guy must have been an Olympic walker, because I didn’t arrive at the college until…

5:15 PM – After trekking through numerous interesting areas of Buffalo, I’m here.  Along my hike, I saw many things, like a guy doing yoga on his sidewalk.  There was a beautiful Victorian house, completely taken over by bikers.  About 30 minutes into my walk, I stop at a gas station, sure that I’ve passed the college.  Nope.  I had another mile and a half to go.

5:20 PM – Scott calls, wondering if I’ve heard about George.  On top of a sinus infection, George was having pain in his mouth/head so bad that he couldn’t stand up.

6:00 PM- George is taken to the dentist, while we work on a contingency plan.

6:40 PM – George calls.  Partial root canal, but he still wants to do the show, earning him the nickname of Super-G-Man.

8:00 PM – George’s Novocain wears off, and the pain medication starts to do its work.

10:15 PM – The show is done, and George insists on doing the meet and greet, rather than going back to the hotel to rest.

11:30 PM – Arrive back at the hotel, meet John, Jeff, and Kevin for dinner in the Thai restaurant downstairs.  Complain about the snooty waitress.

1:00 AM – Return to the room.

2:00 AM – Get out of bed to take a gander at the commotion on the street below.  A guy wanted to fight, his girlfriend wanted him to stop, she walks away, he follows her, she walks away, he follows her, rinse, lather, repeat.  She finally disappears into the night.  He’s about to go beat up on this guy again, the cops show up, and he innocently walks away.  I know such a boring incident shouldn’t warrant much space on this page, but I was watching “Cops” at the time, and it was like I was seeing a “Cops” live stage show from the comfort of my hotel room.

2:30 AM – Set the alarm for 8:00 AM.
