Road Journal

20-Oct-06
Evansville, IN

8:00 AM – The alarm goes off, as I spend a good five minutes trying to figure out whose house I’m in.  For a second, I thought I was going to have some explaining to do.

9:00 AM – I meet Fred, Jeff, George, John, Kevin, and Scott’s parents in the main house for a truly awesome breakfast.  I had never had pumpkin pancakes before.  It’s a first-class place all the way.

9:30 AM – We load up the van and head to the airport to pick up our rental cars.  Jeff, Fred and I then go to baggage claim, where I am reunited with my clothes and merchandise.  And as a cute little touch (which, admittedly, made me feel a little better), the bags had a tag that said, “Sorry I’m late.”  Heart wrenching, no?  You walk into a small room, and there are your poor, innocent, unsuspecting bags.  They’ve been abused, mistreated, lonely, cheated, misunderstood.  Almost brought a tear to my eye.

1:00 PM – We arrive at the hotel in Evansville and immediately go on the hunt for food.  Fred opted for Arby’s, while Jeff and I hit the Long John Silvers next door.  There, we saw something we had never seen before, and may never see again.  They had the oil that they use to fry things.  It comes in a big 18 inch cube of shortening.  They drop it into a perfectly sized vat, and it melts in about ten minutes.  It was the most fascinating thing either of us had seen that day.

3:00 PM – Fred and I drive the sound equipment one block down the street to the theater loading dock.

7:00 PM – The guys arrive for soundcheck.

7:30 PM – Quick meet and greet backstage with people from the American Red Cross.  This concert was, in part, a thank you to the Red Cross volunteers who help out with the recovery after a deadly tornado last year.  Because of that, the guys filled a request later that night for “I’ll Hear Your Voice.”

8:10 PM – The guys hit the stage.

10:05 PM – The guys leave the stage for the final time, after several encore songs.  Hot crowd!

11:00 PM – The guys head backstage for dinner, and we all walk back to the hotel.
